Responsible travel creates value

Sustainability is not a label on a brochure. It is the relationship between travel, communities and place.

By André Kiwitz · Founder and CEO of Ventura Travel

Responsible travel has become a familiar phrase. That is progress, but it creates a risk. When every company uses the same language, it becomes easy to say the right thing without changing much.

The test is practical: does travel create real value for the people and places that make the journey possible?

That means local partners should be long-term collaborators, not interchangeable suppliers. Communities should have a voice in how tourism develops. Environmental protection needs money, commitment and accountability, not only a carbon statement at checkout.

This is why I founded V Social Foundation and support The Forest Guardians. The work is about turning a belief into practical action: community-based tourism, cultural preservation, environmental protection and Indigenous-led stewardship.

Travel can connect people across cultures and channel spending into local economies. But this only happens when a company designs for it deliberately. If all the value leaves the destination and all the pressure remains, the model is not responsible.

The future of travel will be judged not only by how far people go, but by what their journeys make possible.
